Jazz man pleads for return of his sax

Tuesday, 6 January 2009

A well-known Londonderry jazz musician has appealed for thieves who took his musical instruments at the weekend to return them.

Gay McIntyre was attacked and struck on the head in the Strand Road area of the city at around 2am on Saturday, December 3, as he walked home from a gig in the city centre.

A saxophone, clarinet and flute worth several thousand pounds, which he had been carrying, were stolen.

Mr McIntyre said: “They are no good to anybody at all. Unless this was a professional instrumentalist, they are completely useless in any other way. I am just devastated.”

Mr McIntyre is well known as a world-class saxophone player and was a key figure in the Big Band and Showband era. He has worked with most of the top players in the world, including Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or with information, should contact police in Londonderry by calling 0845 600 8000, or through the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
