A judge probing the UVF murder of a pensioner said he doesn’t want the inquest process turned into “a cloak and dagger exercise” by unnecessary applications for anonymity and screening.
The warning from Justice Reg Weir was issued during a preliminary hearing into the killing of Roseanne Mallon, who was shot dead at a remote country house near Dungannon in May 1994.
The inquest is likely to explore why soldiers on an operation overlooking the scene, who reported gunfire, were ordered “not to react” as the killers escaped.
During yesterday’s hearing, a timetable was agreed for the submission of applications for anonymity and screening, ahead of the inquest’s scheduled opening on May 17 next year.
