Kenny Egan haunted by missing gold

Silver medal winning boxer Kenny Egan last night admitted that he is still haunted at letting the gold title slip away.

The atmosphere was electric in Dublin Airport as Ireland’s Olympic stars returned home to a heroes’ welcome, but Egan said that having a gold at his fingertips has killed him.

The weary boxer, whose eye was still bruised from an earlier bout, said his win at the Beijing Games still hasn’t hit him.

“That medal was in my hand at one stage and it just slipped away,” he said.

“It kills me. It’s killing me today. Even after the fight I was cursing myself. It’s still haunting me today.”

Egan narrowly missed the gold at the Workers Arena in Beijing when he was beaten by home favourite Zhang Xiaoping by 11-7.

But he was a champion on home soil where his biggest embrace came from proud parents Paul and Maura.
