Lake search for man after wife's body found in home
Wednesday, 25 November 2009
Police divers were today searching a lough for an elderly man who went missing after the body of his wife was discovered in their family home in Co Fermanagh.
The woman, named locally as Ann Barbour, was found by a neighbour in the Sligo Road area in Enniskillen, shortly before 8pm yesterday.
It has still not been established how Mrs Barbour, who was in her 80s, died.
It is understood, however, she had been suffering from a long- term illness.
Her husband, Bill Barbour, a retired teacher and a former Alliance candidate, is still missing.
PSNI officers were focusing their search for Mr Barbour in the Rossole Lough area in the town this morning.
Police today said they are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body.
The house and street remained cordoned off as a team of officers, including forensic experts resumed an examination of the house.
DUP councillor for the area Cyril Brownlee said the news of the death of Mrs Barbour and the disappearance of Mr Barbour have come as “terrible shock” to local people.
“It is very, very, sad to hear of the death of Mrs Barbour,” said Mr Brownlee.
“They are a very well-known family in the area.
“People just can’t believe what has happened.”
Independent councillor Gerry McHugh said people are “incredibly saddened” by the death.
“This is obviously a very tragic situation,” he said.
“My thoughts go out to the whole family circle.
“I understand there was a long term-illness involved, which is very, very sad.”
Mr Barbour taught at Portora Royal School during the years 1951-1983.
He is also well known throughout the Enniskillen area for supporting the development of local cycle paths.
Mr Barbour had met with the former Environment Minister Arlene Foster in 2007 to discuss road safety for cyclists.
Mr Brownlee added: “Mr Barbour is a well-respected man.
“The whole situation has just come as a complete shock for many people. I would like to give my condolences and sincere sympathy to the Barbour family.”
