Local charity is child’s play for Madonna

Madonna has made a personal donation of two of her best-selling children’s book to a Northern Ireland charity.

The Queen of Pop handed over a pair of signed, first-edition copies to go under the hammer at the White Sapphire Ball, which takes place on Saturday, October 3 at Belfast’s Europa Hotel.

The self-penned titles by the star, The English Roses and Mr Peabody’s Apples, topped the world’s bestseller lists upon release and are just one of the exclusive lots up for grabs during the ‘Money Can’t Buy’ Grand Auction at the massive fund-raising bash.

It is understood this is the first time Madonna has personally donated items for auction to a charity in Northern Ireland.

All proceeds will go to the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice.

On September 15, 2003, Madonna released her first children's book, The English Roses. It instantly became the biggest and fastest selling book ever by a first-time children's author, becoming an international best seller.

Madonna's subsequent release, Mr Peabody's Apples, came out two months after The English Roses. It was also an international best seller.

The White Sapphire Ball promises to be the one of the keys events of the 2009 social calendar.

The artistic line-up includes Riverdance, the Ireland String Quartet and comic Tim McGarry.

Actress Seainin Brennan, who is organising the event, treated children from the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice to a special reading of Madonna’s books.

She said: “The delight on the children’s faces at the hospice when they were part of this special reading was marvellous.

“Any Madonna fan or literary collector has, for the first time in Northern Ireland, the opportunity to acquire some iconic memorabilia from one of the defining legends of our generation.

She added: “We would like to sincerely thank Madonna for her donation.”

Other VIP packages that will go under the hammer include a round of golf with Rory McIlroy, as part of a fantastic luxury golf package at the five star Lough Erne Golf Resort.
