Cuddly teddy bears, soft toys and floral tributes mark the location of an unremarkable house on Enniskillen’s Glebe Park that is at the centre of a harrowing police investigation.

“Rest in peace,” read one written tribute.

“Another little angel for God, rest in peace wee pet,” said another.

Shocked residents were still desperately trying to come to terms with the horrific news of the murder of baby Millie Martin, when the Belfast Telegraph visited the area yesterday — three days after the tot was taken to hospital.

As police officers stood guard outside Millie’s semi-detached home, neighbours spoke at their distress over grim details of the atrocious assault on the toddler on Thursday.

Glebe Park was viewed by many parents as a safe haven where children could enjoy play time unharmed, but today, that trust has been replaced by unanswered questions about what happened to baby Millie.

While the baby lived at the private rented house with her mother, Rachel Martin, few of their neighbours knew them well.

Ms Martin previously worked at Kenny’s take-away restaurant at Forthill Street in the town which was closed yesterday.

One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “We are still in total shock.

“I have a five-month-old child and even though I have a monitor at the cot, I just keep running up to check the baby is all right.

“We don’t know the facts, but especially when you have a young child yourself, it makes you more wary. It is the lowest of the low, despicable.”

A clearly distressed woman who lives in Glebe Park said: “I definitely think an animal would not do it to its own. It’s just not human, everybody is in shock.

“I just hope the poor wee pet is in heaven.”

Another neighbour said: “We are shocked and I think everybody is. It is so unfair, what did a little baby ever do to deserve that?”

Another mother, who did not want to be named, said: “I am horrified. It hits home hard when you have children of your own.”

Yet again, a parent of small children who lives a short distance from the house said: “We are all devastated up here. It is hard to believe that this has happened.

“I would have known the mother just to see. You never expect anything like this to happen on your doorstep.”
