Man denied bail to go to anniversary Mass

A man accused of being part of a robbery plot has been denied bail to attend an anniversary Mass for a teenage daughter killed by a so-called joyrider.

Bernard Rooney (39) was seeking compassionate release for the service to mark the fourth year of the tragedy. His 15-year-old daughter Jamie-Lee Rooney was killed along with Paul McCrory (22) in a car crash on the Falls Road, Belfast.

Rooney's mother was prepared to collect him from prison and put up a £2,000 cash surety, the court heard yesterday. The bail application was refused by Mr Justice Hart, who also acknowledged the tragic background.
