Man held after fan killed by head injury at football match

Monday, 8 February 2010

A football supporter who died after an incident at a Premier League game has been named by police.

John Steven Taylor (30), from Avallon Way in Darwen, Lancashire, died in hospital just before 2am yesterday morning.

Mr Taylor, a Blackburn Rovers supporter, was found unconscious on the concourse of the south stand at Stoke City's Britannia Stadium just after half-time during Saturday's clash with Blackburn.

He was treated at the scene for a head injury and cardiac arrest, then taken to hospital where he later died.

A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman last night said: “A Home Office post-mortem was carried out earlier today and the cause of death was due to a head injury.”

She said a 25-year-old man from Preston arrested by police in connection with the incident remained in custody.

Yesterday Chief Inspector Adrian Roberts, match commander at the game which saw Stoke beat Blackburn 3-0, said there were just over 1,300 Blackburn fans at the game, and no Stoke fans were involved.

Blackburn Rovers said the club was saddened to learn of Mr Taylor's death. Stoke City said it would make no further comment as police were investigating.

Horse first, then cart ... it’s time nationalists got real about unity

No political regime likes uncertainty. Talk of unexpected elections makes politicians twitchy. Meal tickets can be put at risk.
