Man hospitalised after attack

A 19-year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries following an assault in Castlewellan in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Three men in their late teens were set upon in the Lower Square area just before 3am.

One sustained serious head injuries while the other two men suffered head and facial injuries however these are not believed to be serious.

SDLP Down councillor Eamonn O’Neill described the events as “barbaric”.

“From what I have heard, this was totally unprovoked, just three lads making their way home after a night out,” he said.

“It is an absolute disgrace that people are going around in this state of mind.”
