Man shot in legs after gang enters home

Police are investigating a possible paramilitary link to a gun attack on a man in Co Antrim.

A gang of up to four men burst into the victim’s home in Laburnum Row in the Twinbrook area near Dunmurry at around 10.30pm last night.

He was shot in both legs. Before opening fire, the men assaulted him. It is understood the man, who has not been named, was still being treated in hospital today. The injured man's condition was not believed to be life-threatening.

Police seeking a motive for the incident said there was possibly paramilitary involvement.

Brian Heading, SDLP councillor for the Dunmurry area, condemned the attack but said dissident paramilitaries were still attracting young people in Northern Ireland.

“I would utterly condemn this attack. These people need to pack up and get off the backs of the local community,” he said.

“There is no excuse for this type of attack to take place in society.”

Mr Heading said that a failure by Stormont between the DUP and Sinn Fein to move government forward has led to a vacuum being created within communities which is being filled by paramilitaries.

Thomas Beckett, DUP chairman of Lisburn District Policing Partnership, said any possible escalation of paramilitary activity was “a great concern”.

He added: “I would urge anyone with information about the attack to contact the PSNI.

“They need the public’s assistance in apprehending those responsible.”
