Men who placed noose around mother's neck and raped her get 14 years

An Irish mother, who was raped in her home while her child played in the next room, told of how she thought she was going to die when her attackers placed a rope around her neck.

The woman described her ordeal as "one of the worst examples of human nature" and told of how she didn't know if she would make it out of the room alive.

John Connors (26) and Patrick Moorehouse (22), both with addresses at Esmonde Road, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford took it in turns to rape the victim, restraining her with a makeshift noose around her neck.

The court heard how the woman ceased to put up any resistance when they placed a rope around her neck, out of concern for her young child, a toddler, who was playing in the next room of the apartment.

Her two attackers were jailed for 14 years at the Central Criminal Court.

Both were convicted by a jury in December last, following an eight-day trial.

The jury of seven men and five women took just under four hours to unanimously find the two guilty of raping the victim on August 31, 2006. Connors was acquitted by the jury on other rape and anal rape charges.

In a victim impact statement, the woman told how she suffers nightmares since the attack, and her confidence and trust in people is in tatters.

"None of the physical pain I suffered was as bad as the pain I felt inside," the woman said.

She described the day she was raped as "the worst day of my life" and said she didn't know if they were going to strangle her with the rope.

"There were two men with a rope around my neck and I didn't know if I was ever going to make it out of that room alive. Part of me thought I was going to die and just be left there."

The woman's ordeal began after the two men came to her door trying to sell her a camcorder. She told them she wasn't interested but they pushed into her apartment.

Mr Justice Birmingham said their crimes were at the higher end of the scale for sentence and merited a term of 14 years. He directed that they also underwent 10 years post-release supervision and that both be registered as sex offenders.
