MPs angry Shoesmith is still on full pay after Baby P report
Wednesday, 3 December 2008
Angry MPs last night demanded to know why Haringey Council’s former children’s services director — Northern Ireland-born Sharon Shoesmith — remains on full pay despite being ousted over the Baby P tragedy.
Ms Shoesmith, from Co Antrim, was removed from her post by the Government yesterday after a report into her department’s shortcomings.
But the north London council has so far only suspended her on full pay — reportedly £100,000 a year — while it processes the case.
Meanwhile, it emerged yesterday that Haringey is investigating a second incident where a child was harmed through suspected abuse or neglect.
The council said it was unconnected to Baby P’s death and confirmed that an independent serious case review is under way, but would not give any more details.
Conservative leader David Cameron led calls for Ms Shoesmith to be sacked as soon as possible.
He told Sky News: “If they failed then they failed, and they shouldn’t be kept on full pay. They shouldn’t be rewarded for that failure.
“It’s good that some of the people have been named and been suspended but we still have a lot to do to get to the bottom of what really happened and to learn all the lessons.”
Inspectors were sent into Haringey last month after the trial of those responsible for 17-month-old Baby P’s brutal death.
The release of their report on Monday led to two senior councillors resigning, three managers being suspended and three social workers being taken off child protection duties.
The inspectors identified a string of “serious concerns” about Haringey’s child protection services, which they described as “inadequate”.
Children’s Secretary Ed Balls used his powers to remove Ms Shoesmith and replace her with John Coughlan, previously Hampshire County Council’s director of children’s services.
Shadow children’s secretary Michael Gove wrote to Haringey Council yesterday demanding to know how long the suspended employees would remain on full pay.
He also asked the local authority to make Ms Shoesmith’s contract public so taxpayers could see on what basis she is still employed.
In a letter to council chief executive Dr Ita O’Donovan, Mr Gove wrote: “Sharon Shoesmith has been judged unfit to continue in her role by an independent inquiry and the Secretary of State.
“Despite this, she still continues to draw a salary in excess of £100,000. Taxpayers will want to know why.
“What is being done to resolve this situation as speedily as possible?”
Liberal Democrat children’s spokesman David Laws said Haringey should sack Ms Shoesmith as Mr Balls did not have the power to do so.
Haringey Council said Ms Shoesmith’s case would be resolved as quickly as possible but refused to discuss details.

This person is not worth £200, never mind £2000. Instead she should be in a court to answer for this poor childs life. Most of these carers or whatever they be called, are grossly overpaid!!!
