Murder victims's body brought home as controversial parade takes place
Saturday, 30 May 2009
The body of Catholic murder victim Kevin McDaid has come home on a night of high emotion in Coleraine.
As his coffin was returned to the family home in the Heights estate, loyalists were beginning a controversial band parade through the town.
The sound of the parade could clearly be heard as Mr McDaid’s sons carried his coffin into their home.
Police mounted a low-key operation in the town centre as the Pride of the Bann parade passed off without incident. Meanwhile, Assistant Chief Constable Judith Gillespie has defended the actions of her officers in the hours leading up to the murder after the McDaid family said they would be making a complaint to the Police Ombudsman.
She said: “I can reassure you that on May 24 my neighbourhood officers worked tirelessly to ease tensions in Coleraine ahead of a Scottish Premier League football match.
“Following the attack, officers were quickly on the scene.”

What kind of people carry out such attacks? I am a Celtic fan who has freinds that support Rangers and we get on great, have loads of banter etc when it comes to football but we respect each other. In saying that if it was a Rangers fan attcked by Celtic supporters I would hold my head in shame.
