New routes from Derry airport in the pipeline

The new manager of Derry City Airport is hoping to be able to announce new routes before Christmas.

Introducing new routes to and from the rest of the UK and to sunshine destinations in Europe is one of the ways he is hoping to reduce the burden of the airport on local ratepayers.

Damien Tierney, named as the new manager this week, also confirmed that the airport committee has been looking at bringing in private investment.

He said: “There is a new structure in place to make the running of the airport more straightforward. It has been streamlined so that the decision-making process is simpler.

“We have been looking at the council maintaining ownership of the site but a private company would run the day-to-day operations.”
