The arctic blast which has brought a chilly start to the new year looks set to continue well into next week with heavy snow showers forecast.
As thousands of revellers wrapped up the old year last night temperatures plummeted to as low as minus 6C in some parts of Northern Ireland.
Temperatures stayed at freezing or below almost everywhere in the UK overnight.
The Roads Service warned motorists to prepare for icy conditions with temperatures expected to dip as low as minus 5C tonight. Snow has been forecast for some areas. Drivers are advised to watch out for icy patches and drive cautiously.
Another cold day is forecast for tomorrow with scattered wintry showers hitting many areas. Temperatures are not expected to rise above 4C.
Forecasters expect the chilly weather to last into next week, with high pressure over the North Atlantic keeping east and north-easterly winds in charge.
Heavy snow falls are expected across parts of Northern Ireland next week. The Met Office said the wintry showers will be heavier and more frequent in the north and east of the province where some significant falls are possible.
Despite the cold snap, 2009 goes down as the fifth warmest year on record.
Meanwhile, almost 2,000 people have had their water supplies restored since the weekend, Northern Ireland Water has revealed.
Since December 27 it has received more than 11,500 calls and has located bursts in more than 50 water mains, most of which have now been repaired.
But NI Water estimates around 200 households still remain without mains water due to a spate of water supply problems in the north and west sparked by sub-zero conditions.
A spokesman said: “Water levels in service reservoirs, affected by bursts in water mains and private supply pipes are now improving.”
