News in brief: Police question man over Army murders

Detectives investigating the murder of Sappers Patrick Azimkar and Mark Quinsey at Massereene Army base have arrested a 51-year-old man.

He was last night being held at Antrim police station where officers were also interviewing him about the two murders and the attempted murders of five other people during the dissident republican gun attack in March. He was arrested in Mid-Ulster yesterday morning.

Coal packer sold shortweight bags

A CO Antrim coal packer was shamed in court yesterday for selling shortweight bags. James Walker, trading as Redon Fuels at Doagh Road, Newtownabbey, was fined £400 plus £25 costs at Newtownabbey Magistrates Court. He pleaded guilty to 15 charges under weights and measures legislation and was given fines of £200 on each of two charges and conditional discharges on the other 13. The case was taken by Trading Standards after tests on 25kg bags of pre-packed coal at a Newtownabbey filling station and later at the Redon premises.

Former UFF killer faces assault charge

A FORMER UFF killer jailed for one of the worst atrocities of the Troubles is expected in court again today. Torrens Knight, who was convicted for his role in the 1993 Greysteel massacre, is due at Coleraine Magistrates Court charged with assaulting two women in the Blackthorn Bar in Coleraine last May.

Belfast man in court over fraud campaign

A BELFAST man accused of an ingenious £10,000-plus ‘transactional reversal fraud' campaign on Coventry Building Society's cashpoint machines has been committed in custody to Southwark Crown Court. Abdel Karim Redjel (30), of Alveston Drive, faces 23 charges of stealing a total of £10,180 between May 25 and June 1, 2007, and attempting to steal an unknown sum from the society on June 2.

Actor laid to rest after private funeral

ONE of Northern Ireland’s most distinguished actors has been laid to rest after a private funeral service. Harry Towb, born in Larne, passed away in his London home last month after battling cancer for a short time. He made numerous appearances on UK television including The Avengers, Casualty, The Bill, Minder, Heartbeat and others.
