Northern Ireland tourist drowns in Australia

A 27-year-old backpacker from Northern Ireland has drowned while swimming in a remote part of northern Australia.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, was among 20 tourists visiting the Malanbanjbanjdju Billabong in Kakadu National Park — the area where the 1980s film Crocodile Dundee was shot.
It is understood he was the only person from the group, who had travelled from Darwin for the weekend, to enter the water where swimming is notoriously dangerous because of crocodiles. His body was pulled from the pool on Saturday after his tour group raised the alarm when he failed to come to the surface.
Superintendent Louise Jorgensen from the Australian Northern Territory Police said there was no evidence a crocodile had been
involved in the man’s death. “He went for a swim in an area which is known to have crocodiles, despite the fact that there were signs and he was not a strong swimmer,” she said.
Superintendent Jorgensen said investigations into his death were continuing.
