16-year-old motorcyclist dies in smash

A 16-year-old motorcyclist has died following a crash in Co Antrim.

Shane Louis Magill, who was from the Randalstown area, was killed in an accident on the Castle Road yesterday afternoon.

The crash happened at the junction with the Milltown Road at around 4.30pm.

South Antrim DUP MLA Trevor Clarke said the community was deeply moved by the tragedy.

“My thoughts and prayers are with this young man’s family this evening,” he said.

“To lose a loved one at such a young and innocent age is heart-breaking.

“As a father, words cannot express my sadness for this young man’s family.

“My heart goes out to them at this very difficult time.

“The people of Randalstown are grieving with them and his family circle are in their prayers tonight.”

Ulster Unionist councillor Stephen Nicholl said he was saddened by the fatality.

“This is very sad news and it is especially hard to take when it is a young person involved,” he said.

Mr Nicholl said there had been a series of accidents in the area in recent years.

“It can be a dangerous stretch,” he said. “The road is windy and traffic has to take it easy.”

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash, which led to the Castle Road being closed for several hours yesterday evening.

Officers want to speak to the occupants of a red-coloured van with a roof rack travelling on the road at the time of the incident.

They have also appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward.
