£27m legal bill for Northern Ireland Executive

An SDLP Assembly member has said the Executive has spent more than £27m on legal advice since 2005/06.

Mid-Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone compiled the figures from answers to a series of Assembly questions.

Mr McGlone said he had not yet received data from the Health Minister, Michael McGimpsey.

“Since he runs a very big department which accounts for almost half the budget, the final total for the Executive will probably be quite a bit higher,” said Mr McGlone.

“These figures need to be seen in the context of heavy expenditure on external consultants which we have previously provided.

“Some figures are missing for the early years due to the cost of providing them, but even for the last three years the total is more than £22m.”
