36 rescued from tower block after fire starts

More than 30 people have been rescued from a fire at a high rise block of flats.

Fourteen floors of the Woodland House in the Whitehouse area of Newtownabbey had to be evacuated after a blaze broke out on level one during the early hours of yesterday morning.

The PSNI had to force entry to a number of properties and around 36 people were guided to safety.

Seven fire appliances from Glengormley and Belfast attended the scene and spent more than three hours tackling the fire. It is understood one person had to be treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The fire is not being treated as arson. But Newtownabbey PSNI area commander, Chief Inspector Stephen Reid, said: "However, this in no way detracts from the bravery and kindness shown by the police officers, members of the public and council staff involved in the subsequent operation."

Evacuated residents were taken by bus to a local leisure centre, but were later allowed to return to their homes.
