Accused in court over hammer murder

A man has appeared at Londonderry Magistrates Court charged with the murder of Paddy Harkin and the attempted murder of Paul Mythen in the city on February 20.

As Paul Greatbanks (46), of Bayview Terrace, stood in the dock, a court clerk put the charges to him and he spoke only to confirm he understood them.

The charges relate to an incident which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning when Mr Harkin's body was discovered in a flat in Bayview Terrace and Mr Mythen, who is 39 and from Letterkenny, was discovered with serious head injuries.

Police suspect a heavy blunt instrument such as a hammer was used in the murder and attempted murder.

There was no application for bail and Mr Greatbanks was remanded in custody to appear in court on March 10 via video-link.
