A 50-year-old man has been arrested following a report of an armed robbery at business premises at the Beersbridge Road in east Belfast.

Shortly after 9pm it was reported that a man entered a post office armed with a suspected firearm.

It's believed that a male member of staff challenged the man, but the man made off with a quantity of cigarettes and a sum of money.

The suspect was arrested a short time afterwards and no one is believed to have been injured during the incident.

A suspected firearm was recovered in the Hyndford Street area and taken away for forensic examination.

Detective Constable Hughes said: "The man, who was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, is currently assisting police with their enquiries."
