Parents in a picturesque coastal village have been left terrified for their children’s safety after a suspected abduction bid on twin teenage sisters.
The 15-year-old girls were walking home at night on the coastal Garron Road in Waterfoot, Co Antrim, when two men drove up to them in a white van.
They got out of the vehicle and chased the girls, who fled to a nearby sports pitch where they flagged down a motorist.
Police have said that there was no communication during the incident, which happened on Tuesday shortly before 10.30pm.
Sinn Fein councillor Colum Thompson said he believed it was an abduction attempt and it has left parents scared and worried.
The father-of-two said it followed a similar incident in Bushmills a fortnight ago.
“The girls went to school today because they wanted to keep things as normal as possible. But when I spoke to their mother she said she has never seen the girls as frightened as they were,” he said.
“A lot of parents are terrified now about their kids being out on their own.
“The girls said a white Transit-type van with two blue stripes approached them and the men got out and chased them. They ran to a play area 150 yards away and one of the girls flagged down a car. It was someone they knew and he brought them home.
“An incident in Bushmills two weeks ago has come to light since. And today people phoned me with unconfirmed sightings of a van with blue stripes in Cushendun.”
Police said they are treating Tuesday’s incident as isolated.
A PSNI spokeswoman said: “Police in Moyle are appealing for information after a report of a suspicious incident at the Waterfoot area last night (Tuesday).
“Shortly before 10.25pm, it was reported that two females believed to be 15 years old were approached by a white van with a blue stripe running from the middle of the bonnet across the roof.
“Two men are believed to have got out of the vehicle and pursued the girls towards local sports pitches in the area,” she added.
“The two men are believed to be in their mid-20s, with the driver believed to be of stocky build and curly hair. The other man is believed to have been wearing slim blue jeans and black coat.”
Inquiries are ongoing and anyone with information can contact police on 0845 600 8000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
