Ben earns MS charity’s top award

A teenager from Northern Ireland who raised thousands of pounds for the MS Society has been named Young Person of the Year at the charity’s awards.

Ben Allister (17) from Fermanagh won the award yesterday at a ceremony in London hosted by TV personality Kate Silverton after he raised more than £19,000 in three months.

He organised a 90-mile sponsored cycle from Enniskillen to Newcastle and also arranged non-uniform days for two schools.

Ben wanted to increase awareness of MS after his mum was diagnosed with the condition. He was nominated by Maureen Welsh, vice chair of the Fermanagh branch of the MS Society.

“It feels awesome to have won. I didn’t expect to win. My mum didn’t believe it at all,” he said.
