Black's sex fantasy was to snatch a little girl and abuse her, murder trial hears

Robert Black

Child killer Robert Black told detectives investigating the murder of schoolgirl Jennifer Cardy that he fantasised about abducting a young girl and abusing her.

Black said in his fantasy he would spot a young girl as he drove along the road and would stop to “persuade” her to get into his work van.

He said he would then “take her somewhere quiet” where he would sexually assault her.

Speaking to PSNI officers in 2005, Black said that he would then drop the girl off somewhere close to the spot where he had abducted her.

As the disturbing details of his fantasy were played to the jury at Armagh Crown Court yesterday, nine-year-old Jennifer’s parents left the room.

When asked by detectives what type of an area he would abduct the girl from, he said “either a quiet urban street or a rural surrounding”.

Jennifer was abducted in August 1981 as she cycled along a country road in Ballinderry to a friend’s home. Her body was discovered six days later floating at McKee’s Dam outside Hillsborough.

Black told officers during an interview that he might “weave” his fantasy around a spot, maybe a picnic area or a lay-by, that he discovered while driving across the UK as a delivery |driver.

“I might have a spot that I think would be an ideal spot that I’ve seen in the past and then I might be in that general area and I might see a girl that triggers off a fantasy, what it would be like to pick her up and take her there,” he said.

Black said he would get the girl into his van by getting out and talking to her or asking her |directions.

“That’s the way it used to work in my mind course in fantasies it always works,” he gruffly told police.

When asked what he would do if the child did not co-operate with him, he replied: “Things always work the way you want them in fantasies you know, in your fantasies you never pick up an awkward customer. You’re lucky that way.”

The court also heard that children’s dresses, a child’s swimsuit, a number of home-made adult toys and child pornography were discovered in the back of Black’s van in 1990 following the abduction of a young girl. Black abducted the six-year-old outside her home in the Scottish town of Stow.

It was this abduction that led to a major police inquiry into Black and his subsequent conviction |for the murder of three young girls.

Sitting in the dock Black began to look uncomfortable as details of his sexual activity were played to the jury.

Black denies murder.

The trial continues.
