BNP chief Nick Griffin targets Antrim shoppers

BNP leader Nick Griffin

The most controversial man in British politics has been accused of preying on racial tensions in Antrim to recruit hardliners into the ranks of the British National Party.

When MEP Nick Griffin flew into the province earlier this month he met with some party faithful in Carrick and Larne before hitting the road again, bringing the BNP bandwagon to the town recently dubbed 'the hate capital of Ulster'.

Once in Antrim Mr Griffin, who has a criminal record for distributing literature likely to incite racial hatred, began handing out leaflets to stunned shoppers.

He paused to take photographs at the Massereene memorial at Market Square before heading off the Steeple estate where he took pictures of local bandsmen and a UVF mural before an altercation erupted with another local man, prompting a hasty retreat by the BNP team.
