The family of a boy who died after being hit by a speed boat in Northern Ireland have said they are devastated.

Stuart Wilson, six, was being towed on a wake board at the time of the accident on Bank Holiday Monday at Cranfield beach, near Kilkeel, Co Down.

He suffered severe head injuries and lost his battle for life at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

A family statement said: "Stuart will always be in our thoughts. Gone but not forgotten."

A special prayer vigil for the youngster and his family was held in his home town of Rathfriland, Co Down, but his parents who had been holidaying at a caravan park at Cranfield at the time of the tragedy, did not attend.

The statement said: "Gary, Heather, Ashleen, Gareth, Hannah and rest of the family are devastated by the death of their son and brother Stuart.

"They are glad that their last memories are of Stuart doing something he loved with his family and friends."

It added Stuart was an outgoing child who loved football, outdoor activities and playing with his many friends.

"We would like to express our sincere thanks to the whole community for their prayers and support at this time," the family added.

"We are especially thankful to those who administered first aid and the various medical teams who cared for Stuart."
