Bomb alert was hoax, say police

A bomb scare has been declared an elaborate hoax.

Homes above a shop on Mill Road in Newtownabbey were evacuated after a suspect object was found yesterday morning.

The road was closed and Army technical officers called, but the alarm was ended at lunchtime.

Residents returned to their homes shortly afterwards.

A PSNI spokesman said: “The security alert has ended and been declared an an elaborate hoax. All roads have been reopened.”

A resident from neighbouring Bawnmore Park said: “There are two flats above the shop, an elderly man lives in one and a man in his 30s in the other, and they were evacuated. I walked my granddaughter to school this morning and we walked by the scene. We weren't evacuated.”
