A pipe bomb has exploded near houses in Holywood, Co Down.

The Army bomb squad were tasked to Church Green after a female resident heard a loud bang outside her home at 12.35am on Tuesday.

A pipe bomb was recovered and taken away for further forensic examinations.

No one is believed to have been injured during the incident.

DUP North Down MLA Alex Easton condemned the attack as a "reckless and indiscriminant act".

He said: "This could easily be a murder scene. Those involved clearly had no regard for humanity or the hurt they could have caused.

"Church Green is a quiet area with a lot of children living and playing in the vicinity.  This incident could have easily hurt or killed an innocent child. The residents of Loughview do not want this activity.

"Those involved need to wise up before someone is killed.  Anyone with information about this crazed act should pass it to the PSNI so that those involved can be brought before the courts."

Enquiries are continuing and police have appealed to anyone with any information to contact them on the new non-emergency number 101.
