Brides to help charity break world record

Rachel Bruce from the Foyle Hospice gets ready for the Brides Across the Bridge event

Forget coming down the aisle in your wedding dress — a local charity is aiming to smash a world record by getting 2,013 brides on to a bridge instead.

The Brides Across the Bridge event in Londonderry will raise funds for the Foyle Hospice during the UK City of Culture celebrations on April 27 next year.

The ‘brides’ do not actually have to be married, they just need to be able to get their hands on a traditional wedding dress to fulfil the Guinness World Record organisation’s criteria, but that can come from any cultural background and era.

“It will be spectacular to have everybody together on the Peace Bridge,” said committee member Elaine Doherty.
