Bus depot blaze threatens chaos

There were fears hundreds of school pupils would be left stranded when one of Belfast’s biggest bus depots closed following a fire yesterday.

Translink bus depot on the Falls Road closed for several hours when a gas canister caught fire.

Three fire crews arrived at the depot shortly before noon.

Some 50 drivers and other staff were evacuated.

Buses from there transport pupils from 30 schools across the city. Police cordons marked a 200m exclusion zone around the bus centre — while firefighters dealth with the aftermath of the fire and removed two canisters from the site.

There were fears that up to 50 buses would be trapped inside the depot all day, but by 1.30pm the buses were moved from the depot, as the exclusion zone was reduced to a 100m. The depot reopened at 3pm. Investigators are trying to establish the cause.
