Officers dealing with a fatal road traffic accident in the Bogside area of Londonderry last year were attacked by youths throwing youths, the Crown Court in the city has heard.
The disclosure was made in the case of Laurence Michael Conaghan from Lisfannon Park.
The 41-year-old breakdown recovery driver pleaded guilty to a charge of causing by careless driving the death of Sarah Patricia Duffy (65) at a pedestrian crossing at Lecky Road on March 12, 2011.
Mrs Duffy was struck by a Toyota people carrier driven by the defendant just two seconds after she stepped onto the pedestrian crossing.
Mrs Duffy, also from Lisfannon Park, was walking home from morning Mass in Long Tower chapel when she was struck.
Judge Piers Grant was told that two days before the fatality the defendant's car had failed its MOT because of a minor braking defect, but that on the day of the accident the braking power of his car was adequate.
Judge Grant adjourned sentencing in what he called “this tragic case” until next Tuesday.
