A 24-year-old man tried to swim across a lake on the outskirts of Derry in an unsuccessful bid to escape from chasing police officers, a court has been told.
The detail was revealed by a prosecution barrister to Judge Piers Grant at Londonderry Crown Court when Ian William Reid, from Crawford Square, was sentenced to two years in jail after he admitted a series of motoring offences.
Reid, who had 63 previous convictions, one of them for stealing £4,000 from his own family, admitted stealing an Audi A4 car from a garage salesman in Ballymoney last August. He also admitted driving the car while disqualified and without insurance around Derry city and county between August 25 and September 5 of last year.
Following a police chase Reid was cornered by police driving along the Tamnaherin Road. However he jumped from the stolen car, climbed a fence and dived into Enagh Lough.
