A number of motorists may have driven over a suspected bomb in east Belfast.

The suspicious device, understood to be a nail bomb, prompted a security alert on Wednesday evening in the Mount Area.

The Albertbridge Road was closed between Castlereagh Street and Woodstock Link.

The alert ended before 11pm and the device was removed for examination.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "It is believed that a number of motorists may have driven over the device before it was reported to police." Ms Long said: "Whoever is behind planting this device is utterly reckless."

Alliance MP Naomi Long - who was in the area during the alert - condemned those responsible, who she said had placed "at risk the lives of local residents and any passers-by".

"The police are currently dealing with a suspected nail bomb device which has been left in the Mount area of East Belfast," she said.

"Clearly, whoever is behind planting this device is utterly reckless, placing at risk the lives of local residents and any passers-by.

"Over recent days there has been an escalation in violence at the interface and this evening, in addition to dealing with the bomb device, the PSNI and Fire Service are also having to deal with a number of other incidents in the Templemore Avenue and Mount areas."
