City centre pontoon nears completion

Londonderry’s new city centre pontoon is expected to be completed in about four weeks, in preparation for upcoming marine events.

The barge ‘Aoife’ is currently in position working on the New Marine Events Pontoon - in the vicinity of Queens Quay - in time for the arrival of the Clipper Round the World Race in Londonderry between June 29 and July 1.

Harbourmaster Bill McCann told the Londonderry Sentinel: “There will be up to 40 floating marker buoys/floats in this area, unlit, during the construction phase. Mariners are requested to keep a good look out whilst navigating in this area and to keep clear of these buoys.

“In addition to the barge, additional vessels will also be involved and working in this area,” he said, adding “diving operations will also take place during stages of the construction”.
