Cliftonville bans fans over player attack and chants

Cliftonville FC last night confirmed it has issued bans to supporters for recent behavioural breaches and has warned that others will soon be subject to similar sanctions.

The Reds face punishment from IFA disciplinary chiefs after a spectator assaulted Coleraine defender Johnny Black (pictured) in the aftermath of the League Cup semi-final clash between the sides three weeks ago at home ground Solitude.

Following examination of the club’s own CCTV footage and consultation with the PSNI, lifetime bans and one-month suspensions have been dished out to guilty parties.

In a statement on its website, Cliftonville also announced that action had been taken against fans who breached the club’s code of conduct during last Monday’s north Belfast derby with Crusaders at Seaview.

Leading loyalist Andre Shoukri was at the game and it was reported the former UDA leader was subject to chanting and jeering from the Cliftonville section of the crowd.

The statement read: “Cliftonville Football Club wishes to reiterate its stance on spectator behaviour and remind all spectators that we will not tolerate any breaches of our code of conduct either at Solitude or at other venues.

“In recent days, the club has issued bans to six persons who have failed to follow our code of conduct.

“These vary in length from a one-month ban to life bans, and are in connection with behaviour at our recent games with Coleraine and Crusaders.

“The club also expects to issue further bans in coming weeks to others who we are in the process of identifying.

“We are also continuing to co-operate with the PSNI in their investigations.

“Be assured that, should any person partake in such breaches of our code of conduct, they too face the possibility of sanction by the club.

“Cliftonville FC do appreciate the fantastic support we have had this season from the vast majority of our fanbase and are determined that this will not be sullied by a few.”
