Co Antrim girl (11) dies on school trip to Scotland

A Co Antrim girl has died while on a school trip to Scotland.

Scottish police said they were called to Loch Insh Outdoor Centre at Kincraig in the early hours of Wednesday morning after an 11-year-old girl was found unconscious.

"Attempts were made to resuscitate her but were sadly unsuccessful and she was later pronounced dead at Raigmore Hospital," they said.

The schoolgirl has been named as Ruby Dench.

The death is currently being treated as unexplained and a post-mortem will be carried out tomorrow.

The youngster - who was a pupil at Whiteabbey Primary School - was in a party of schoolchildren.

Scottish police have said that "as a precaution, some of the children who had also been feeling unwell, were examined by a doctor. None of these children had serious symptoms and gave no cause for any concern".

School principal Peter Wright paid tribute to the young pupil.

"She really did bring a brightness to every day in the school and clearly at this time our thoughts are with her parents, brother and wider family," he said.
