Tributes have been paid to a Co Down man who died in an early morning road accident yesterday.

It is understood that Lee Drake (44) was originally from Ballygowan but had been living in Ballynahinch.

He died when his black Vauxhall Astra was involved in the accident on the Ballygowan Road in Saintfield at 6.20am.

No other vehicles were involved and police have appealed for witnesses.

Yesterday morning saw icy conditions on the roads.

The PSNI revealed between 6am and 9.30am officers attended 42 collisions.

Mr Drake's death is the sixth on our roads in two weeks. Last January six people died in the entire month on the roads.

Police have expressed concern at the number of deaths.

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan is to convene a special meeting of the Road Safety Forum group today.
