Roads Minister Danny Kennedy has announced that a Vesting Order has been drawn up for the planned £60m upgrade of the A2 Shore Road between Belfast and Carrickfergus at Greenisland.
It means the Department of Regional Development will be able to acquire land to build a new dual carriageway between Shore Avenue at the University of Ulster and Seapark. Work is expected to start early next year and will take up to two years.
Properties were acquired several years ago in order to upgrade the stretch, a notorious bottleneck, but the plan has been in limbo ever since.
Early last year the decision by then Roads Minister Conor Murphy to ‘park’ the dualling scheme for four years, despite £16m already spent by his Department, sparked outrage among residents.
DRD had already spent £4m on surveys and consultation, while another £12m had been spent on buying up houses and land on the route of the planned upgrade.
