Death in PSNI custody was of natural causes

The death of a man being questioned in connection with a murder in east Belfast was from natural causes, his family has said.

James McVeigh (34) died in a cell at Musgrave Street PSNI station on Tuesday, three days after his arrest by officers investigating the murder of George Gray (52) in his Cregagh Road home on August 31.

A statement from Madden & Finucane Solicitors, released on behalf of Mr McVeigh’s family last night, described him as a “vulnerable young man”.

It said his family had not seen him during the three days he was detained by the police and also denied his involvement in Mr Gray’s murder.

The Police Ombudsman's office is currently investigating the circumstances of Mr McVeigh’s death.
