The pensioners were not attacked but have been traumatised by their ordeal.

A police spokeswoman said: “It is believed the men were armed with a knife and they slashed and damaged furniture.

“The two ladies in their 80s were not injured during the incident but were badly shaken.”

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan condemned the yobs responsible.

“The actions of these two young thugs will have shocked and distressed many people living in the Glen area,” he said.

Mr Durkan said the community will rally to support the sisters and he urged anyone with information to contact police.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact them on 0845 600 8000.
