The family of murdered Irish student Nicola Furlong have reacted furiously to the sentencing of an American musician who was found guilty yesterday of her murder, calling it a “travesty”.
Tokyo District Court sentenced 19-year-old Richard Hinds to a minimum of five years for strangling Ms Furlong last May.
Delivering the verdict, a nine-member panel of professional and lay judges called the murder “atrocious and vicious” and handed down a sentence of “not less than five and no more than 10 years”, with labour.
The sentence was the maximum allowed under Japanese law because Hinds was a minor at the time of the crime.
Ms Furlong's mother, Angela, branded the decision “a travesty”.
