Father's moving tribute to teen victim of Co Fermanagh road smash

David McNulty (18) died on Saturday following a one vehicle crash just outside Belcoo

A heartbroken father has paid tribute to his teenage son, one of five people killed on our roads in the past week.

David McNulty (18) died in the early hours of Saturday morning just outside Belcoo in Fermanagh.

He had just completed his Level 2 electrical skills programme at the South West College, where his tutors had nominated him as student of the year.

His heartbroken father Eugene described David as a "gentle child who grew up to be a gentleman".

The Belcoo teenager was one of five deaths due to road accidents over the last week.

Two men died following a collision near the Belvoir estate in south Belfast on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday a 51-year-old woman died in a crash in Magherafelt, Co Londonderry, and on Monday evening 49-year-old Mark McClements was killed close to Carrickfergus, Co Antrim.

David died following a one-vehicle crash which was reported to police at 2.55am on Saturday.

Scores of mourners attended Requiem Mass on Tuesday at St Patrick's Church, Holywell.

In a statement to the Fermanagh Herald, Mr McNulty spoke fondly of his son's smile.

"He grew up to be a quietly confident young man who loved his family and loved his friends," he said.

"He was very spiritual as well as being very gifted in many fields.

"He had just completed his second year's electrical training, having recently won a special achievement award from South West College."

Mr McNulty continued: "David was a gentle child who grew up to be a gentleman.

"We know he is with God and we look forward to being reunited with him, where there will be no more pain or separation, and see his smile again."

A spokesman for the South West College confirmed that David had been nominated for student of the year and that he had gone on to win the award for his electrical skills.

David is survived by Eugene and mother Clare, sister Sarah, and three brothers Joel, Sean and Paul.
