Former husband to stand trial over strangling of nurse at her home

A former policeman is to stand trial accused of strangling his ex-wife, a judge has ruled.

The body of Pauline Haveron, a 53-year-old nurse, was found in a bath at her Huntingdale Green home in Ballyclare, Co Antrim in April 2010. Her former husband Joseph Haveron (57) is charged with the murder.

He appeared before Belfast Magistrates' Court yesterday to decide whether there is a case to answer. Haveron, of Tudor Road, Carrickfergus, denies the killing.

During preliminary enquiry proceedings he declined to call witnesses or give evidence.

Defence lawyer Stephen Toal, of MacElhatton Solicitors, said the prima facie case against his client was temporarily conceded. Deputy district judge Peter King granted a prosecution application for Haveron to be returned for Crown Court trial on a date to be fixed.

The former RUC man, (left) who served for nearly 30 years before leaving the force in 2003, was released on continuing bail.

At a previous hearing it emerged that when she died his wife had been in a relationship with a man 25 years her junior.

Ms Haveron began seeing her son’s friend Andrew Jones after he briefly went out with her daughter, a judge was told. Lawyers for the defendant have previously claimed that the relationship coincided with the deterioration of the Haveron’s marriage.

Ms Haveron was the mother of two grown-up sons and a daughter. She is said to have lived for her family and church.

In a statement released by her family soon after her death, they said their lives had been ruined by the brutal murder.

“Words cannot describe how extremely close we all were to her,” the statement said.

During his police career, Haveron worked as a trained pursuit driver and was said to have witnessed “horrific” incidents.

One involved seeing a teenager blow himself up in Belfast, which led to him suffering post-traumatic stress symptoms.
