Former NIO minister David Cairns dies after illness

Former Northern Ireland Office minister David Cairns has died in hospital from acute pancreatitis.

The Labour MP for Inverclyde was taken into intensive care eight weeks ago.

Mr Cairns (44) died on Monday at the Royal Free Hospital in north London. He leaves behind his partner Dermot and brother Billy.

He joined the NIO team in 2006, responsible for Agriculture and Rural Development, Regional Development, and the Environment.

Mr Cairns, a former Catholic priest, was first elected to Westminster in 2001 as Labour MP for Greenock and Inverclyde.

Labour Party leader Ed Miliband paid tribute to Mr Cairns, saying: “We will miss him profoundly. He was a good man.”
