Iris Robinson could make her first public appearance since the toyboy scandal at the Royal wedding on April 29.
DUP sources say it is a 50/50 bet whether the First Minister’s shamed wife will attend the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey.
The Office of First Minister and Deputy First Minister confirmed on Friday that Peter Robinson has an invitation to the wedding and is entitled to bring a “guest” with him.
OFMDFM wouldn’t make any comment about whether the First Minister would be escorted to the wedding by his wife but speculation is rife within the DUP about who he will take to the Abbey.
“Can’t see Peter not going but the question is who will he take,” said one source.
“Does he bring Iris out of the shadows and into the full public glare or does he take his daughter Rebekah (his private secretary) with him?
“She is a very pretty girl and probably would love to savour the occasion,’’ one of the party’s MPs said.
Opinion is divided within the party as to whether Iris is ready to step into the intense media glare for the first time since her affair with toyboy Kirk McCambley was exposed last year.
The 1,900 guests will be filmed and photographed by media outlets from around the world.
Iris has been seen around the Dundonald and Comber areas in recent weeks. She was spotted at her favourite hairdressers in Dundonald and by residents inside a smart housing complex in Comber.
In late 2009 Mrs Robinson announced she was quitting politics and since then she has withdrawn from public life.
One party official who met her after Christmas said she had improved since last year but doubted she would want to walk into the glare of publicity at the Royal event.
