Funeral tribute to avalanche tragedy doctor

Family and friends attend the funeral of avalanche victim Una Finnegan at St Malachy's Church in Coleraine on Saturday

The cousin of a young doctor killed in an avalanche in Scotland described her as a shooting star whose showers of light fell like blessings on the lives of all who knew her.

One week on from the accident which claimed the lives of Una Finnegan (25) and three of her friends at Glencoe, she was laid to rest in her hometown of Coleraine. Hundreds of mourners were led by Una's parents, Owen and Mary, her twin sister Lynn, sister Kate and brother Terence at the poignant service at St Malachy’s Church.

Canon Sean Rogan told the congregation about Una's love of mountaineering. “The outdoors, and in particular the mountains, were special to her.

“Una's cousin paid a loving tribute to her in a moving letter, the last line which I now quote: ‘Una shines. And if, like a shooting star, she has taken off in a blaze of glory, the showers of light she has left behind are blessings in all our lives,” Canon Rogan told the mourners.
