Garda killer returned to Irish jail

Garda Gary McLoughlin's killer Martin McDermott has been extradited

A Garda killer has been extradited back to the Republic.

Martin McDermott, 26, who fled across the border eight months into a sentence for the manslaughter of Garda Gary McLoughlin, was later arrested in Derry and then jailed for four months for assaulting Police Service of Northern Ireland officers, resisting arrest and disorderly behaviour.

Police in Belfast confirmed that McDermott had been handed over to the authorities in the Republic to serve out the rest of his term for killing Garda McLoughlin.

The officer died when his squad car was struck at speed by a stolen car driven by McDermott at Burt, Co Donegal, in December 2009.

McDermott, from Raphoe, Co Donegal, escaped from Loughan House prison in Blacklion, Co Cavan, on March 15. He was later detained in the Galliagh area of Derry, where he tried to escape police by climbing a wall and running off.

He was jailed for eight years - one of them suspended - for Garda McLoughlin's manslaughter.
