Disturbing CCTV footage of a 26-year-old man being kicked unconscious has been shown in a courtroom — causing viewers to gasp.
In the footage Sean Paul Roche (24), an electrician from Templegrove in Londonderry, is seen taking off his shirt before punching his victim to the ground.
Roche is then filmed kicking his victim on the head as he lies on the ground.
His third kick, with his right foot, is seen landing on the victim's chin.
There were gasps at the magistrates court in Derry yesterday when the footage showed the victim being thrown back by the force of the kick as he tried to stand up. The kick immediately knocked him unconscious.
Roche, who pleaded guilty to a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, carried out the attack in the early hours of January 28.
After he had kicked his victim unconscious, Roche was then filmed running away and waving his shirt in the air. Defence barrister Paul Kearney described the assault as “violent, sustained and disgraceful” and he said the contents of the CCTV footage were shocking.
“The defendant's parents are in court and they are mortified and outraged at the actions of their son.
“They are now asking themselves what they could have done to prevent their son engaging in this type of disgraceful behaviour,” he said.
Mr Kearney said Roche had recently qualified as an electrician and was due to start a permanent job on Monday of next week.
Jailing him for six months, District Judge Barney McElholm also ordered Roche to pay his victim £1,000 in compensation.
“There is nothing that can be said in your favour other than you admitted the offence”, he told Roche.
