It's the country he humbled in a legendary World Cup moment.

Now Gerry Armstrong is putting down deeper roots in Spain as his wife gets set to open a new business there.

The former Northern Ireland footballer who scored the winning goal against Spain in the side's epic 1982 World Cup performance is settling in his beloved adopted country to live permanently there with his family.

The 60-year-old commentator will be fully behind his wife Deborah, who is going into partnership with best friend Lisa Millar to open their new bar and restaurant in the affluent Portals Nous area of Majorca.

While Armstrong is still actively working and will be commentating for ESPN during the World Cup in Brazil, the new business venture is part of the plan for his eventual retirement.

He and his family set off for Singapore yesterday, from where he will commentate on the World Cup.

Afterwards they will move to the southern part of the holiday island ahead of the opening.

The bar is bound to become a mecca for football fans from the UK and beyond as they try to grab a glimpse and a selfie with the sporting star.

Opening next month, the new venture – Hermanas Portals (Portals Sisters) – is also bound to attract famous guests, such as former England footballer Jamie Redknapp, who has a holiday home in the area.

It is situated at the marina at Portals Nous and is beside the well-known restaurant, Wellies.

Deborah (39) formerly owned a catering business, while close friend Lisa (43) also ran her own beauty salon business in Belfast for around 20 years.

Mrs Armstrong said: "It was always our intention to return to Majorca to live and we had been interested in finding a business opportunity for some time.

"We are delighted that we are moving over to start a new life and a new business with our close friend Lisa Millar.

"We are really excited about this brand new chapter in our lives."

PR director Cathy Martin, who is a close friend of the couple, said: "The new bar restaurant will be a casual dining place and the plan is for Lisa to manage the bar while Deborah will be overseeing the kitchen.

"Opening the bar and restaurant in Majorca was definitely part of the retirement plan for the Armstrong family, even though Gerry will continue to work for Sky Sports."
